Recommended Books for Preschoolers from Cape Town's Child
Wild Alphabet by Mike Haines and Julia Frolich
Animals literally jump off the pages in this illustrated pop-up book featuring 26 wild animals. Young children can discover facts about these creatures with the help of the pop-ups and moving parts. With each animal on its own spread, there is enough space to inform children where each creature lives and what they eat. Some of the animals might be unknown to South Africans, but it’s still a fun way to learn the A-Z.Jack and the Beanstalk AND Little Red Riding Hood by Nick Sharratt and Stephen Tucker
Each book is a funny re-telling of a classic fairy tale with lift-the-flap surprises on every page. Children from as young as three will enjoy the rhyming text and colourful illustrations. In thius version there are no threats from the Giant “to grind his bones to make my bread”, and both Red Riding Hood and Grandma survivie the ordeal – so it shouldn’t frighten little children. Older children will love the humorous take: “when they found Gran in the wardrobe she said: ‘Don’t you agree, Red Riding Hood needs glasses if she thought that wolf was me!’” Each book comes with a CD so that little ones can also listen to the story in the car. What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks
Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len have a cunning plan to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow. Among all the noisy farm animals lives a tiny silent ladybird. This beautiful glittery creature (little fingers will love to feel her sparkly shape) is so quiet that she hears the two crafty robbers plotting to raid the farmyard. The ladybird has a plan of her own and urges the animals to put their mooing, quacking, neighing and baaing to cunning use. The crooks get so confused that they end up getting caught. The book comes with a CD, read by Alexander Armstrong.Book details

Edutaining Guide With Wild Alphabet
Wild Alphabet by Mike Haines and Julia Fröhlich (Pan Macmillan), R151. ISBN: 9780753430316 – Books that act as reading aids are great for young readers – repositories of knowledge, but also objects of amusement. Every page here features an animal, with the corresponding letter of the alphabet (“L” for “Leopard”, etc) forming part of a pop-up structure.
How long these delicate mechanisms will last in the hands of a four-year-old is anyone’s guess, so it’s probably worth ensuring that a parent is involved.
Adults can then also point out that it’s probably only in the US where a hummingbird would be called a “Xantus”. Given, there aren’t many choices at that end of the alphabet, but still, between this bird and the “Utahraptor”, a dinosaur, there might be some explaining to do at the zoo…

Anne-Catherine De Boel helps children deal with loss in Alba
Anne-Catherine De Boel helps children deal with loss in her book Alba. The opening line sets the tone, ‘Alba is five years old. She is sitting on a stone in the front of the house and she is waiting’. Alba then journey’s through the Forest, Lake and plains to find the special person she is waiting for. Loss is a difficult subject for everyone more especially children, Alba helps to break the ice by starting the conversation and helping children see that things will be okay if they look at things with positive eyes. Here is an article on dealing with loss for children:
At some point your child will be faced with a loss or death and they will need help understanding what happened, why it happened and their feelings about it. How much they understand, how it affects them, and how you talk about it depends greatly on their age and level of emotional development. While a school age child (usually after age 7-9) may understand that death is permanent, a younger child may not understand that death is not reversible. Also, younger, preschool age children are egocentric and have ‘magical thinking,’ and may believe that they caused the death because they were mad or had bad thoughts about the person who died.

Bongani's Day in Words and Pictures by Gisele Wulfsohn
Part of the A Child’s Day series, Bongani’s Day focuses on the daily lives and experiences of a boy named Bongani.Bongani’s day begins just like it does for most children: he washes, brushes his teeth and has breakfast; later at school he learns all about the letter C and makes a clown face from a paper plate. But when Bongani gets home in the evening, he puts on his kwaito music videos and dances the kwasa kwasa to the lively sounds and rhythms of South Africa…
You’ll love this book for its:
- Fantastic photographs and stunning designs make this book truly attractive for children to read.
- Supplemented by information text, with glossary and pronunciation guide, further facts about the country, more typical words and phrases in Afrikaans.
SA Book Partners has two reviews of Bongani’s day on their site here:
Who would have believed it could happen? In Westdene, once an all-white racist Johannesburg neighborhood under apartheid, a seven-year-old, black child Bongani Mofokeng, lives with his aunt Manana, his white uncle David, and his two older cousins, Thabi and Flory. Accurate and entertaining, this lively photo-essay in A Child's Day series, with full-color pictures and a few paragraphs of text on every page, shows Bongani attending his integrated local school (where his favorite subject is computer skills).
About the author
Gisele Wulfsohn studied Graphic Fine Art at the Johannesburg College of Art. Since the late l980s Gisele has documented various HIV/AIDS awareness initiatives and in 1994 she was commissioned by the Independent Electoral Commission to document the first democratic elections in South Africa.
