Ndingumhlaba is undoubtedly a great addition to environmental education. The excitement brought about by the personification of the environment fueled a curiosity that led to an unplanned story play lesson in my grade R classroom of 40 children. Some of the children lay on the ground pretending to be the soil, while other children poured water and sprinkled leaves on them to help them breathe. The children learned with great fun and tears that maybe human beings should not be irrigated to assist in breathing. The single sentences on pages provide opportunity for discussion and creativity, as learners wanted to conceptualize their own meanings of what the land represents to them. This book is a keeper; every classroom literacy corner and school library should have it.
