The story is written by Carl de Souza. This story is about a young girl called Citronella who was deaf and could not be cured by anyone. Her family became agitated with Citronella since she would not listen to her parents and siblings. They took her to see a medical doctor, but the doctor’s prescription did not give Citronella her hearing back. The family then decided to take her to see a traditional doctor. That failed as well. The family gave up on Citronella ever hearing them and took her to her grandfather who had lost his hearing as well over the years.
UCitronella is a story filled with great knowledge, as it teaches about the different kinds of healing one can get. It also teachings patience. The story shows that streams of communication are not only the ones deemed as the norm but there are many ways of communicating and listening to others. For Citronella communication was easier through nature and calmness. Her family also realized that there were many things they were missing out on hearing through the noise and finally understood Citronella.
This story is great for mother tongue isiXhosa speaking children in higher grades (grades 4 to 7) at primary school because its grammar is reasonably complex. It is quite remarkable as it makes one think deeper and pay attention even to the little things in life.
