Maryanne Bester is a South African author known for her literary works that focus on the complexities of life identity and relationships. She has gained recognition for her ability to address deep social and personal issues in her writing often exploring themes related to family dynamics cultural traditions and the challenges faced by women in South African society. Sisters Maryanne and Shayle Bester have written nine picture books together all published by Jacana. Three Friends and a Taxi was a winner of the 2004 Sappi Isiqalo Book Competition and The Cool Nguni was one of the winners of the Exclusive Books IBBY SA Awards. The sisters grew up on a Free State farm but now live in Gauteng with an assortment of family and animals. All their stories draw on their deep affection for the people places and eccentricities of Africa.

Shayle Bester is a South African children’s book author and illustrator. She collaborates closely with her sister, Maryanne Bester, and together they have created a number of illustrated picture books celebrating African life, nature, and culture. Raised on a Free State farm, Shayle brings a strong sense of place and a deep affection for African animals and people into her work. She illustrates many of their books — including The Cool Nguni and Three Friends and a Taxi — with lively, warm visuals that appeal to young readers.
